This calculator estimates individual income tax under the Income Tax Act 2023 and Finance Ordinance 2025 (NBR). Under the Act 2023, private-sector salaried taxpayers receive a single consolidated exemption (one-third of salary income or the cap, whichever is lower) in place of separate house-rent/medical/conveyance exemptions. This is an estimate, not tax advice — verify with a registered tax professional or the NBR before filing. Online filing is mandatory for most individuals via etaxnbr.gov.bd.
How Income Tax Is Calculated in Bangladesh
Individual income tax in Bangladesh is progressive: you pay nothing up to a tax-free limit, then a rising rate on each band of income above it. The calculation follows a clear sequence total your salary income, subtract the salary exemption to find taxable income, apply the slabs, deduct your investment rebate, check against the minimum tax, add any surcharge, then subtract tax already paid. The result is what you owe or are refunded.
Tax-Free Income Limits (AY 2026-27)
The amount you can earn before any tax applies depends on your taxpayer category. For income year 2025-26, the limits are: general taxpayers ৳3,75,000; women and senior citizens aged 65 or above ৳4,25,000; persons with disability and third-gender taxpayers ৳5,00,000; and gazetted war-wounded freedom fighters ৳5,25,000. A parent or legal guardian of a person with disability adds ৳50,000 to their applicable limit, claimable by one parent only.
For the previous year, AY 2025-26, the general limit was ৳3,50,000, with correspondingly lower figures for each category. The calculator switches all limits automatically when you change the year.
Income Tax Slabs and Rates (AY 2026-27)
Tax applies only to income above your tax-free limit, in progressive bands. For a general taxpayer: the first ৳3,75,000 is taxed at 0%; the next ৳3,00,000 at 10%; the next ৳4,00,000 at 15%; the next ৳5,00,000 at 20%; the next ৳20,00,000 at 25%; and any remaining income at 30%.
A key change under the Finance Ordinance 2025 is the removal of the old 5% entry slab the first taxable band is now 10%. Only the income falling within each band is taxed at that band’s rate, so reaching a higher slab never raises the tax on income below it.
Salary Exemption for Employees
Salaried taxpayers receive a single consolidated exemption: the lower of one-third of total salary income or ৳5,00,000 (raised from ৳4,50,000 in the previous year). This replaced the older system of separate house-rent, medical, and conveyance exemptions for private-sector employees under the Income Tax Act 2023. It is the largest deduction available to most salaried people and applies before the slabs.
Investment Rebate
Investing in approved instruments reduces your tax through a rebate. The rebate is the lowest of three amounts: 3% of your taxable income, 15% of your actual eligible investment, or ৳10,00,000. Eligible investments include Sanchayapatra (savings certificates), Deposit Pension Scheme (DPS), life insurance premiums, recognised provident fund contributions, listed shares and mutual funds, government securities, and approved donations. Certain instruments carry their own sub-limits, such as DPS up to ৳1,20,000 per year. Crucially, the rebate is forfeited entirely if you file your return after the deadline.
Minimum Tax
If your income exceeds your tax-free limit but your calculated tax (after rebate) falls below the minimum, you pay the minimum instead. For AY 2026-27 this is a flat ৳5,000 for all taxpayers regardless of location, replacing the earlier location-based amounts (৳5,000, ৳4,000, or ৳3,000). New or first-time taxpayers pay a reduced minimum of ৳1,000. If your income is below the tax-free limit, no minimum tax applies.
Wealth Surcharge
Taxpayers with substantial net worth pay an additional surcharge on their tax. It begins when net worth (total assets minus liabilities) exceeds ৳4 crore, rising in tiers: 10% above ৳4 crore, 20% above ৳10 crore, 30% above ৳20 crore, and 35% above ৳50 crore. The surcharge is calculated on the tax payable, not on income directly.
Employer-Provided Car
If your employer provides a car for personal use, a notional amount is added to your taxable income each month based on engine capacity: ৳15,000 up to 1,500cc, ৳20,000 up to 2,000cc, ৳30,000 up to 2,500cc, and ৳50,000 above 2,500cc. These figures rose sharply under the Finance Ordinance 2025.
TDS, Monthly Deduction, and Filing
Tax deducted at source (TDS) or advance income tax (AIT) already paid is credited against your final liability, and any excess is refundable. Your employer should deduct roughly one-twelfth of your annual tax each month as TDS. The filing deadline, known as Tax Day, is 30 November 2026 for AY 2026-27. Online filing is now mandatory for most individuals through the NBR e-Return portal at etaxnbr.gov.bd. Filing late means losing your investment rebate and may attract delay interest of 2% per month.
Who Needs to File
You must file a return if your income exceeds the tax-free limit. Filing is also required for company directors, government employees, those assessed in the previous three years, and anyone who needs Proof of Submission of Return (PSR) for services such as a trade licence, a bank loan above ৳5 lakh, vehicle registration, or land registration in city corporations. A TIN is required once your income crosses the tax-free threshold and is free to obtain online.
